Survey of Activated Persulfates by Electrical Current in Presence of UV to Decrease of COD from Industrial Wastewater

Background & objectives: Advanced Oxidation processes (AOPs) are extensively are applied in industrial waste water treatment plants to improve the treatment process. Persulfate activated with power current in presence of ultraviolet rays is considered as combined or hybrid process. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of this process in COD removal of industrial wastewater.
Methods: The experimental study was conducted in a batch photoreactor. Four iron electrodes in monopolar shape were connected to power current and used as anode and cathode. The affecting parameters including pH (3-11), initial Prsulfate concentration (1-5 mMol/L), and direct current electricity (3.125-15.625 Ma/s.cm2) were investigated in the removal of COD in industrial wastewater. COD were measured according to closed method in standard methods for water and wastewater.
Results: The findings obtained from the present study shows the combined process is of high performance in removal of COD (93.1%). The optimum conditions were found to be pH =3, power current (15.625 Ma/s.cm2), Persulfate (4 mMol/L), and contact time (150 min).
Conclusion: The persulfate activated in presence of power current and ultraviolet rays was found to be a high-performance process in COD removal. This method can be applied to eliminate pollution from wastewater as a pretreatment or supplementary (advanced) after conventional wastewater treatment processes. In operation, the simplicity of this method makes use of this in large scale.
