The Study and Comparison of General Health Status in Shift and Day Workers of Tehran Subway Operation Company: A Multivariate Analysis

Background & aim: Growing of world population and the necessity of meeting Needs of human societies and also the importance of industries in economic prosperity of countries in today's competitive world as well as constant activity of many critical jobs and services have caused the appearance of shift working as one of the occupational stressors in today’s world. Therefore more study and attention to this phenomenon for control or mitigate its negative effects have great importance; hence the aim of this study is to investigate the relation of shift working with general health of people.

Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey which was conducted on a sample including 200 employees of Tehran’s Subway. In order to collect information a questionnaire with two parts including basic demographic questions and general health questionnaire (GHQ-28) that includes 4 subsets (somatic symptoms, anxiety and insomnia, social dysfunction and depression) was used. The data were analyzed using multivariate variance.

Results: The average scores of general health questionnaire indicated that day work employees are in a better condition from the perspective of general health in compare with shift work employees and also a significant correlation between type of work and general health subsets was proved.

Conclusion: Based on proving the influence of shift work on general health it seems that some activities such as systematic planning of work-rest times, using a proper rotation pattern for the shift work employees, training and identification of high risk people could help to reduce negative effects on general health.
