Quantification of Health Impacts of Exposure to Atmospheric PM2.5 Using AirQ Model in Tabriz City

Objectives & objectives: Airborne particulate matters adversely affect human health and increase the risk of diseases and mortality. Tabriz city with a population of 1.5 million is one of the cities with severe air pollution problems. The aim of present study was to quantify health impacts of exposure to PM2.5 in ambient air of Tabriz city. 

Methods: In this cross sectional study, AirQ2.2.3 software (model), provided by WHO/Europe, was used to estimate the numbers of deaths, hospital admissions, cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases caused by exposure to PM2.5. Concentrations of PM2.5 were obtained from Tabriz environment protection organization in 2014 and entered into the model after initial processing by WHO guideline. 

Results: Respective numbers of total deaths, deaths due to cardiovascular disease, deaths from pulmonary disease, and hospital admissions due to cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases attributed to atmospheric PM2.5 in Tabriz city were estimated to be 297, 78, 16, and 199 individuals in 2014. Annual mean concentration of PM2.5 was 22.52 µg/m3, which was two-fold higher than the national clean air standard and WHO guideline.

Conclusions: The highest rate of deaths and cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases attributed to PM2.5 were observed following prolonged exposures to high PM2.5 concentration. Therefore, it is necessary to apply control measures to reduce pollutant levels and increase public awareness on personal care and protection procedures.
