Efficiency of Mn2+/H2O2 Process in Removal of ReactiveBlue 19 Dyes from Aquatic Environments

Background & objectives: Colored wastewater is important due to presence of toxic and persistent compounds. Several studies have been done on its treatment in recent years. Advanced oxidation processes have been used to remove organic compounds from aqueous environments. The aim of this study was to evaluate efficiency of the Mn2 +/ H2O2 in removal of Reactive Blue 19 from aqueous solutions.
Methods: This experimental study was performed in a 1L batch reactor. Studied variables include pH, Mn (II) concentration, H2O2 concentration, exposure time, and initial dye concentration. Dye concentrations were measured by a spectrophotometer at the wavelength of 592 nm. The removal reaction kinetic was studied in optimal conditions.
Results: Maximum removal efficiency was observed at pH=3 and the efficiency decreased by increasing pH. However, removal efficiency was increased by increasing Mn2+concentration and the maximum efficiency occurred at the concentration of 3 g/l. Process efficiency at the H2O2 concentration of 4 mol/L was maximum and the efficiency reduced by increasing H2O2 level. The efficiency also reduced to about 75.5% by increasing dye concentration to 300 mg/l. At optimal condition (pH=3, H2O2 concentration = 4 ml/l, Mn (II) concentration=3 g/l and initial dye concentration=25mg/l) the color removal efficiency was 99.56% after 120 minutes and the process followed second order kinetics' equation.
Conclusion: According to the results, H2O2 activated with Mn2+ catalyst can be an alternative process for removing Reactive Blue 19 from aqueous environments.
