Intensity of Illumination and Ultraviolet Radiation in Study Rooms of Ahvaz Jundishapoor University of Medical Sciences

Background & objectives:  Appropriate light and its optimized distribution in reading rooms are basis for personnel comfort and their function and can delay eyestrain and accuracy decrease among university students. Therefore, present study aimed to assess light intensity and ultraviolet radiation in study rooms of Ahvaz Jundishapoor University of Medical Sciences in 2014.
Methods: Present cross-sectional study conducted in 8 reading rooms. Illumination and UV radiation intensity were measured based on the methods proposed by IESNA using TES-1330 and Hagner digital ec1 Luxmeter, respectively. Finally, the results of illumination and ultraviolet radiation intensity were compared with standard values using SPSS-19.
Results: School of Paramedics has the highest (656 lux) and school of Public Health has the lowest illumination intensity (163 lux). School of Nursing has the highest (0.54 W/m2) and school of Public Health has the lowest (0.02 W / m2) ultra-violet intensities.
Conclusion: Comparing to the standard values, general illumination were higher in paramedics and Nursing schools and lower in Public Health and Pharmacy schools. The highest Ultra-violet radiation intensity was measured in study rooms of nursing schools.
