Investigating the Correlation of Shift Working with Social Phobia and Mental Health among the Military Staff

Background & aim:  Shift Working is one of the known harmful ergonomic factors that is inevitability caused by technological achievements and has several impacts on physical and mental health of workers who occupied in related jobs. This study aimed to investigate the correlation of shift working with social phobia and mental health among the military staff.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 75 subjects of the military staff, who selected by simple random method, in Mehr 1395. Connor Social Phobia Inventory and Witt mental health questionnaires were used for collecting the data. The data was analyzed by using SPSS-20, descriptive statistics, independent t-test and ANOVA test.

Results: Average score of the mental health questionnaires showed that the mental health of subjects was in undesirable conditions 87.19 (11.43). The results of the social phobia questionnaire showed that social phobia was at a high level 51.37 (9.22). The results of the ANOVA test showed that there is no a significant difference between age and scores gained from mental health and social phobia questionnaires. Also the results of this test showed that there is no a significant difference between work history and scores gained from mental health and social phobia questionnaires.

Conclusion: The results of this study showed that shift working has impacts on mental health and social phobia of the studied subjects for improving the mental health and reducing the social phobia of shift work individuals, intervention actions should be taken into account.
