Background & aim: The high volume of produced wastewater in communities and the adverse effects of its discharge into the environment and human health, make the treatment and disposal of wastewater necessary before releasing to water bodies. Todays, the most important activities to control pollution due to wastewater are construction of wastewater treatment plants and monitoring of their performance. So this study was performed with aim of evaluate the efficiency of wastewater treatment plant in 1393 in Khalkhal city.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study was conducted during 12 months (from March 2014 to March 2015), monthly sampling of influent and effluent of wastewater (8 times per month) were obtained for the parameters pH, TSS, BOD, COD and coliforms and fecal coliforms. The examinations were carried out according to the latest version of standard methods. Finally data was analyzed using Excel software.
Results: According to monthly average of measured parameters in raw sewage, amount of BOD, COD, TSS and pH were reported 269 (mg/l), 502.32 (mg/l), 215.3 (mg/l) and 7.03 respectively. The percentage removal of BOD, COD, TSS and total coliform was calculated 92.4, 91.2, 82.70 and 98.51% respectively.
Conclusion: The overall assessment of water supply systems and sanitary facilities show that these parts are the factors threatening human health and their good management and control can prevent from many diseases, disabilities, death and additional burden on the health and economic systems. Despite appropriate performance and good quality effluent of Khalkhal wastewater treatment plant for agricultural purpose, it is recommended to monitor the effluent of treatment plant continuously to prevent the occurrence of unwanted problems.
