Background & objectives: Use of psychology in working environment (e.g. nurses) along with accurate scientific findings in this field can reduce employees' occupational diseases and promote their occupational performance. This study investigates the relationships between personality traits, demographic factors and job stress in workplace.

Methods: This research was conducted on 95 nurses working in hospitals affiliated to Gonabad University of Medical Sciences in 2014. Data were collected using demographic questionnaire, NEO Five-Factor Personality and Osipow job stress questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 17.

Results: The mean age of participants was 31.27 years with standard deviation of 5.32. There were significant relationships between mean score of occupational stress in both men and women and two groups of BSc and MSc graduates (p<0.05). Pearson correlation test showed a significant relationship between job stress and agreeableness (p=0.001). No significant relationship was found between job stress and other personality characteristics.

Conclusion: According to this study, personality characteristics affect nurses' occupational stress. It is suggested to place nurses in appropriate sections based on their personality trait using psychological consultation. Further studies in this area are necessary since other factors may also contribute to increased job stress.
